Excellent Tamil-to-Tamil-and-English dictionary geared toward modern usage. Can be used with students beginning at intermediate level.

Schiffman, Harold F. An English Dictionary of the Tamil Verb. Unfinished NEH-funded project; gives Tamil equivalents, Spoken and Written, for English verbs; verb classes, case frames; synonyms. Example sentences in LT and ST where appropriate. Currently in electronic form, about 2/3rds complete.

Tamil-English, most comprehensive and authoritative. Goes in and out of print; may be available in Heidelberg on-line dictionary.

The most useful English-Tamil dictionary (though this is not saying much, since English-Tamil dictionaries are typically not much use to second-language learners.)
