ARIT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS

ARIT directly supports and administers a variety of programs of fellowships for scholarly research and for language study in Turkey.  Programs for U.S. –based scholars and graduate students include the ARIT, Kenan T. Erim, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the ARIT-Princeton Summer Language Program at Bogazici University in Istanbul.  ARIT Fellows come from all regions of the country and represent many fields of the humanities and social sciences.  ARIT fellowships support individual research projects in ancient, historical, and modern times in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, that must be carried out in Turkey.  

Opportunities for Turkish students and scholars include the Hanfmann and Turkish Fellowship programs and the Cross-Coulson Aegean Exchange .  The Mellon Fellowships support advanced scholars from east European and Baltic countries.

Fellowship Programs offered by the American Research Institute in Turkey include:

American Research Institute in Turkey Fellowships for Graduate and Post-Doctoral Research in Turkey
ARIT Fellowships support research in ancient, medieval, or modern times, in any field of the humanities and social sciences.  Post-doctoral and dissertation research fellowships may be held for terms of two months to one year.  Stipends generally range from $4,000 to $16,000.  Applicants must be affiliated with U.S. or Canadian institutions.  ARIT Fellowship support comes from the U.S.Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Exchanges, administered in part by the Council of American Research Centers, and from the American Research Institute in Turkey.

National Endowment for the Humanities/ARIT Post-Doctoral Fellowships
ARIT/NEH Fellowships, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, provide longer term support for advanced research in all fields of the humanities, including prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history.  The fellowship tenures range from four months to a full year.  Stipends range from $13,335 to $40,000.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents affiliated with U.S. or Canadian institution and have completed formal training in their field of study.

Kenan Erim Fellowship

Funded by the American Friends of Aphrodisias, the Kenan Erim Fellowship supports archaeological excavation and research at the site of Aphrodisias in Turkey.  

Bogaziçi University Summer Language Program in Advanced Turkish Language
The ARIT/ Princeton University/BU Program offers scholarship, travel, and stipend to support eight weeks of intensive advanced study of Turkish language and culture at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul.  Applicants must be graduate students in good standing or advanced scholars and also must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The Bogaziçi University Turkish Language and Culture Program offers intensive courses at all levels.

Critical Language Scholarships at Summer Institutes:
New programs support graduate and undergraduate students who will participate in intensive study of Turkish at the beginning and intermediate levels during the summer, 2009.  This is a new separate program for language study. Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowships for East European Scholars
Three or four post-doctoral fellowships are available to scholars from the East European and Baltic countries including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania.  Fellowships provide support of up to $11,500 for two to three months of research in any field of the social sciences or humanities to be carried out in Turkey.  Fellows may make use of ARIT center facilities to carry out their work.  Program details for 2009 will appear here later in the fall. 

Turkish Fellowship Program

This program provides support for Turkish scholars and advanced graduate students affiliated with Turkish institutions who are conducting research in any field of the humanities or social sciences in Turkey.  Administered by the Turk Amerikan Ilmi Arastirmalar Dernegi in Istanbul.


W.D.E. Coulson & Toni Cross Aegean Exchange Program
The W.D.E. Coulson & Toni Cross Aegean Exchange Program supports Turkish scholars who wish to conduct research in Greece. The purpose of these fellowships is to promote closer relations and scholarly exchange between Turkey and Greece by supporting the research of nationals of the Republic of Turkey in any field of the humanities and social sciences from pre-historic to modern times who need to conduct their study in Greece. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) cooperates to support the program.   

George and Ilse Hanfmann Fellowships and Machteld J. Mellink Fellowship Program

his program provides support for Turkish yournger scholars and advanced graduate students in archaeology and related fields who are affiliated with Turkish institutions and who wish to study abroad in North America or elsewhere.   Administered by the Turk Amerikan Ilmi Arastirmalar Dernekler in Istanbul and Ankara.

Getty Exchange Fellowship Program
The Getty program supports scholars who are Turkish citizens and who have already obtained a Ph.D. or have professional experience in the study or preservation of cultural heritage, and who wish to undertake a specific research project at an overseas research centers in another country.  Funded by the Getty Foundation, the fellowships require scholars to affiliate with one of several American overseas research centers.

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), of which ARIT is a member, sponsors the Advanced Multi-Country Research Program which allows scholars to conduct research inmore than one country, at least one of which hosts an American overseas research center.   The program is open to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have earned their doctorates in fields in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences, and who wish to carry out research of regional significance.   For further information, see the CAORC prog
