I am writing a peculiar history of Zen in America, tracing its legacies from the anthropological writings of the French and German Enlightenment to the D.T. Suzuki lectures at Columbia where John Cage, Erich Fromm, Ad Reinhardt, Allen Ginsberg and others were present, and passing through issues in colonialism, translation and Orientalism on the way.
