Fringed garments, like those prescribed in Numbers 15:37-41, worn
by
Asiatics. Egyptian painting shows that the "four corners of garment,"
mentioned in Numbers 15 as the place where the fringes/tassels are to be
attached, refers either to (1) skirts with scalloped hems, with the
fringes attached at the points of the scallops, or (2) to skirts with 4
vertical bands, with the fringes attached where the bands meet the hem.
Such fringed garments were typically worn by wealthy/nobility, implying
that in addition to serving as reminders of God's commandments, the
fringes also symbolize Israel's status as God's nobility.
