Students enrolled in NELC languages are encouraged to pursue the Certificate in Language Study. Notation on the transcript that the student has earned the Certificate demonstrates enhanced linguistic and cultural competency, especially valuable in the Middle Eastern areas that have such an impact on
global developments.
NELC grants the Certificate to any student who completes three units of coursework in Arabic beyond the proficiency-level required to fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences' language requirement (i.e. above ARAB 034, Intermediate Arabic IV) and who earns an average of B+ or better grade in those courses. Each course must be taken for academic credit and a grade.
Interested students should consult the Concentration Advisor, Language Coordinator, or Faculty Liaison in the appropriate language about courses that count toward the Certificate. These may include FLAC (Foreign Language Across
the Curriculum) courses in which students enroll in a special discussion section of a lecture course to discuss course content in the language. Courses in literature and culture taught in the original language also count. Study abroad credit may also be counted toward the Certificate with prior approval.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
1. Complete three course units of coursework, taught in Arabic, beyond language-requirement proficiency (i.e., beyond NELC 034).
2. Earn an average of B+ or better in those three course units.
3. (If applicable) Obtain departmental approval for study abroad courses.
The NELC departmental worksheet should then be completed and submitted to the student's College.
Students with prior background in Arabic will be held to different standards than those with no such background, and no student will receive a Certificate without the approval of the Language Coordinator or the Faculty Liaison. Students concerned about shaping a curriculum that fulfills the Certificate's
requirements should see the Language Coordinator for placement or take the placement examination at the beginning of the academic year.
Students who wish to make professional use of Arabic after graduation should consider fulfilling at least the minimum requirements of the Certificate. Other options are also available. The Certificate is earned with the completion of seven course units for students who do all their language study at Penn, while
the minor in NELC requires eight credit units. Thus the course of study for the Certificate will fulfill most of the requirements for a minor as well. Completion of seven course units for the Certificate also fulfills one half of a NELC major. Speak with an advisor to compare options.
