Between two youths leaning on their staffs and listening attentively, a third (blond and perhaps a little younger) sits by a chest, opening a roll; he holds the first sheet and is looking for his text. In the field, athletic equipment. On the chest, a closed roll with the inscription: +IRONEIA, on the chest, KALE. Beazley suggests (AJA) chironeia kale, a moralizing text. The scene fixes the moment just before the beginning of a recitation and has no doubt erotic overtones. Other inscriptions: KALO[s]PANAITIOS (retr.), and KALOS. (Immerwahr (1964), p.21)
