Avery Goldstein

Professor, Political Science Department

Avery Goldstein, Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley, is Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as Chair of the Graduate Program and Associate Director of the Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics. In addition he is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, where he was Director of the Asia Program from 1997-2002. Professor Goldstein specializes in international relations, security studies, and Chinese politics. He is the author of Deterrence and Security in the 21st Century: China, Britain, France and the Enduring Legacy of the Nuclear Revolution (Stanford University Press, 2000) and From Bandwagon to Balance of Power Politics: Structural Constraints and Politics in China, 1949-1978 (Stanford University Press, 1991). His other publications include articles in International Security, International Organizaiton, The Journal of Strategic Studies, Security Studies, Orbis, The China Quarterly, Asian Survey, Comparative Politics, and Polity. Presently he is conducting research on China's grand strategy in the post-Cold War world.
