Information for Schools

Asia Day

In the Spring of 2001, the Center celebrated its first "Asia Day" for high school students at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. "Asia Day" is a day full of lectures, tours and demonstrations by Penn faculty and students designed to spark students' interest in Asia by introducing them to a range of East Asian topics. The Spring 2001 program featured lectures ranging from Buddhism in Asian Art to Mummies of the Tarim Basin to Samurai and Martial Arts and Korean History. The program concluded with a demonstration of Japanese Tea Ceremony. In upcoming years the Center hopes to involve student organizations on campus to include a culture fair that offers students an additional "hands-on" approach to learning about East Asia. If you are interested in participating in this annual event, please contact the Outreach Coordinator. East Asia in the Schools

East Asia in the Schools

The East Asia in the Schools program is a special effort to reach high schools in the region. By making arrangements through the Center for East Asian Studies, area high schools can host a University of Pennsylvania professor specializing in East Asia who will share his or her expertise with students in one-hour lectures on many popular aspects of China, Japan, and Korea. Funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the University of Pennsylvania makes these talks available for no cost to schools.
