Intensive introduction to Classical Greek morphology and syntax. This course includes exercises in grammar, Greek composition, and translation from Greek to English. Emphasis is placed upon developing the ability to read Greek with facility. |

This course is for those who have completed ancient Greek102 or equivalent. You are now ready to begin reading real Greek! We will read a selection of passages from Greek prose authors, focusing on language and style. There will be regular quizzes. The course will include some grammar review. |
Revenge: Euripides/Thucydides

We will read two contemporary works that consider the question of revenge in the context of the Peloponnesian War: Euripides' Hecuba and the debates in Book 3 of Thucydides' History. |

Aristophanes VANP 6th flr Smith Seminar Room |
This graduate seminar will introduce students to all of Aristophanes' eleven extant plays, as well as to the rich body of fragmentary comic poets of classical Athens (such as Cratinus and Eupolis). We will survey the various critical approaches to Old Comedy--historical, literary, performative-- and the special problems that arise with comic and satirical texts. |
