Below is the public statement that we submitted to the Daily Pennsylvanian for publication on Monday, November 18, 2002. It was signed by 166 faculty and staff members.
A CALL TO THE COMMUNITY TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED
MEETING AND TEACH-IN
On Tuesday, November 19, 2002 Huntsman Hall F85, 4:30 - 6:00 PMWe the undersigned members of the faculty and staff at the University of Pennsylvania invite students, faculty, staff, and our neighbors in the Philadelphia community to join us in expressing profound opposition to the Bush administration's threatened war on Iraq.
The Bush administration has:
- FAILED to demonstrate any connection between a war on Iraq and the attacks of September 11, 2001;
- REFUSED to share with us the true costs of such a war in loss of life and resources for both innocent Iraqis and Americans should an invasion of Iraq take place; and
- ALARMED us with its new doctrine of "preemptive" and "unilateral" action in military affairs, leading us to fear for America's moral standing within the global community.
Before the administration launches such a war in our names, a war that will increase rather than decrease the threats to our national security, we invite members of the University and Philadelphia communities to a meeting to share their concerns regarding the impending war on Iraq and hear experts on the Middle East, military strategy, and geopolitics discuss the probable consequences of a war.
