Celluloid Demons
During the course of the semester a number of films will be the
focus
of intensive analysis and discussion:
- The Devil and Daniel Webster
- Rosemary's Baby
- Mephisto, the 1981 academy-award-winning film by Istvan Szabo
- Ikiru, a classic Japanese film by Akira Kurosawa, famed for his
samurai movies
- O Brother, Where Art Thou?, cult classic by the Coen brothers
- Angel Heart, starring Mickey Rourke, Robert DeNiro and Lisa Bonet
With one exception, all the films will be screened in Annenberg 110
starting at 7:00.
Feel free to invite friends.
- Feb 13 Rosemary's Baby
- Feb 27 Mephisto
- Mar 16 Devil and Daniel Webster
- Apr 11 Angel Heart
- Apr 17 Svankmajer's Faust
If you are unable to attend a screening or want to see the film a
second
time, there are several additional opportunities. You will be able to
see
two of them on ResNet at scheduled times; if you have a VCR, you may
want
to record them. All of the films are available in Van Pelt
Library in the Rosengarten
Reserve Room where you will also find screening facilities.
Finally,
you should be able to check out all of them from local video rental
stores (such as TLA and Video Library)..
The schedule listed above is for broadcast on PVN Movie Channel 11.
All films that are broadcast on Channel 11 are repeated four hours
later
on Channel 22, so each showing listed actually equals two showings for
that day. In addition to that, each film is in the regular movie
rotation
of 14-16 movies per week, so it will receive supplementary showings not
listed here.

schedules and follow links for the Movie Channel.ResNet.
There are many other films that retell the story of the Devil's pact
in one way or another and you'll see the occasional clip in class.
