(Oxford University) Augustinianum, Rome, Italy Through lectures and discussions of assigned readings, particularly of _The City of God_, participants will explore Augustine's critique of late Roman imperial political society and his suggestion of an alternative political vision. Discussion of primary texts, including his preaching against pagan religions and his correspondence with imperial officials will take place against the backdrop of the accumulated scholarly discussion during this century of the place of Augustine's political views in modern society. Included in this treatment will be a review of the emerging post-modern political critique of Augustine. * * * * * Monday to Friday 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM "Augustine and the Bible: The Hermeneutics of Salvation" Dr. Thomas F. Martin, O.S.A., Ph.D. (Garrett-Northwestern University) Villanova University Scripture was the privileged source and measure for Augustine's theological and spiritual vision. This section will explore the Bishop of Hippo's approach to and understanding of the scriptural word and his conception of its role in the life of the church and the Christian. Through readings in primary sources including the De doctrina christiana, exegetical works, and preached commentary, the participants will be guided into Augustine's interpretative framework and its actual application. This will be placed in dialogue with contemporary hermeneutical and pastoral approaches to scripture. _____________________________________________________________ The seminar is designed for graduate credit or audit; a preparatory reading list will be supplied. Along with the ten class sessions, requirements will include two evening sessions and a research paper to be completed within three months.
