Oskar Braun, "Ein Brief des Katholikos Timotheos I u%ber biblische Studien des 9 Jahrhunderts." Oriens Christianus 1 (1901) 299-313. Contributed by Robert Kraft (6 March 1997), for general use. This is the second in a series of articles by Braun on the writings of Timotheos, Bishop of Seleucia (ca 800). The Syriac text is printed on the left page in the original article, with the German on the right, Loeb style. The line numbers refer to the German lines (the Syriac has its own line numbering which is not synchronized with the German!). For convenience, I've divided the pertinent material at each sentence break and supplied a very quick and dirty translation, without reference to the Syriac (please help massage it into better shape!); very interesting stuff, from a very interesting and understudied source. This is "letter 47" in the miscellaneous collection. Timotheos to writes to Sergios, Bishop and Metropolitan of Elam. The first part (German pp 301, 303, and half of 305) discusses copies that were made of Origen's Hexapla, including details of how many copyists, how long it took, etc. page 305 line 15 ... Soweit daru%ber. {So much for that.} Wir erfuhren von glaubwu%rdigen Juden, die eben als Kathecumenen im Christentum unterrichted wurden, dass vor 10 Jahren in der Na%he von Jericho in einem Felsenhause Bu%cher gefunden wurden. {We have learned(?) from trustworthy Jews who had been instructed as catechumens into Christianity that 10 years ago in the region of Jericho books had been found in a cave.} Es heisst na%mlich, dass der Hund [20] eines jagenden Arabers einem Thiere folgend eine Ho%hle betrat und nicht zuru%ckkam. {It happened that the dog of a hunting Arab that was following an animal entered a hole/cave and did not come out.} Sein Herr folgte ihm und fand im Felsen ein Ha%uschen und darin viele Bu%cher. {Its owner followed it and found in the cliff a little house containing many books.} Der Ja%ger ging nach Jerusalem und teilte es den Juden mit. {The hunter went to Jerusalem and informed the Jews.} Sie kamen in Menge heraus und fanden die Bu%cher des alten [25] (Testamentes) und andere in hebra%ischer Schrift. {They came en masse and found the books of the old (Testament) and others in Hebraic writing.} Und da der Erza%hler ein Schriftkundiger und Schriftgelehrter war, fragte ich ihn um manche Stellen, die in unserem neuen Testamente als aus dem alten angefu%hrt, aber dort nirgends erwa%hut werden, weder bei uns Christen, noch bei den Juden. {And since the narrator was knowledgeable about writing and was learned, I asked him about the many passages in our New Testament that seem to be derived from the Old, but nothing is found there either by us Christians nor by the Jews.} [30] Er sagte: sie sind vorhanden und finden sich in den dort gefundenen Bu%chern. {Since I heard this from that catechumen and also asked the other separately and discovered the same story without difference, I wrote about it to the noble(?) Gabriel and to the Subhalemaran (?Diaspora bishop?), the Metropolitan of Damascus, that they might search in those books and see whether there occurs anywhere in the Prophets the passage: "He will be called a Nazarean" (Mt 2.23), or "An eye has not seen and an ear has not heard" (1 Cor 2.9; Isa 61.4), or "Cursed is anyone who hangs on the wood" (Gal 3.13; Dt 21.23), or "He has wrested the borders of Israel" (?) according to the word of the Lord that he spoke through Jonah to the prophets of Geth Opher and other similar things that are introduced into the New Testament from the Old but are not present in the (text) that we possess.} [15] Auch bat ich sie, wenn sie die folgenden Worte in jenen Bu%chern finden wu%rden, sie mir in jedem Falle zu u%bersetzen. {I also bid them, if they were to find the following words in those books to transmit/translate them to/for me in any event.} Es heisst na%mlich im (Psalm): Erbarme dich meiner, o Gott, nach deiner Gnade "Sprenge u%ber mich mit dem Hysop des Blutes deines Kreuzes und reinige mich". {It reads in the (Psalm) that starts Have mercy on me, O God, according to your grace, "Sprinkle on me with the hyssop of the blood of your cross and purify me" (Ps 50/51.9/7).} Dieses Wort [20] findet sich nicht bei den Septuaginta, noch bei diesen andern (Uebersetzern), noch bei dem Hebra%er. {This saying is not found in the Septuagint, nor in the other (translations), nor in the Hebrew.} Es sagte aber jener Hebra%er zu mir: "Wir fanden in jenen Bu%chern mehr als 200 Psalmen Davids". {But that Hebrew said to me, "we found in those books more than 200 Psalms of David."} Ich schrieb nun an jene daru%ber. {Now I am writing about that in addition.} Ich denke jedoch, dass diese Bu%cher niedergelegt wurden [25] von dem Propheten Jeremias, oder von Baruch, oder von einem Andern aus denen, welche das Wort Gottes ho%rten und davon bewegt wurden. {I think, nevertheless, that these books had been left behind by the prophet Jeremiah, or Baruch, or some other of those who heard the word of God and were moved by it.} Als na%mlich die Propheten in go%ttlichen Offenbarungen die Eroberung, Plu%nderung und Verbrennung, die u%ber das Volk wegen seiner Su%nden kommen [30] sollten, erfuhren, da verbargen sie, fest u%berzeugt, dass keines [[309]] der Worte Gottes zu Boden fa%llt, die Schriften in Felsen und Ho%hlen und versteckten sie, damit sie nicht im Feuer verbrennen, noch von den Plu%nderern geraubt werden sollten. {As the prophets in divine revelations revealed the conquest, plundering and destruction that would come upon the people because of their sins, they concealed there, being absolutely convinced that none of the words of God should be lost, the writings in cliffs and caves and deposited those so that they would not be burned with fire or stolen by the plunderers.} Die sie aber verborgen, starben im Laufe von 70 [5] Jahren oder fruher und, als das Volk von Babel zuru%ckkehrte, war niemand u%brig von denen, welche die Bu%cher niedergelegt. {But having hidden them, they died in the course of 70 years or less and, as the people returned from Babylon, none of them were left who deposited the books.} Desshalb waren Esdras und die Andern gezwungen, zu suchen und fanden, was die Hebra%er festhalten. {Thus Ezra and the others were forced to seek and discover what the Hebrew contains.} Der bei den Hebra%ern (vorhandene Text) zerfa%llt in 3 Teile (?). {The (present text) in the Hebrew consists of 3 parts.} [10] Aus dem einen u%bersetzten spa%ter die 70 Uebersetzer jenem der Ruhmeskrone wu%rdigen Ko%nig Ptolema%us (den Pentateuch); aus dem Andern ubersetzten spa%ter jene Andern (die ubrigen Teile des alten Testamentes); der dritte ist jener, der bei ihnen (unu%bersetzt) bewahrt ist. {From one part the 70 translators later translated that for the famous king Ptolemy (the Pentateuch); from the second part some others later translated (the rest of the OT); the third is that which among them was protected/kept (untranslated).} Wenn diese Stellen [15] sich in den genannten Bu%chern finden, so ist klar, dass sie verla%sslicher sind als die bei den Hebra%ern und bei uns (benu%tzten). {When these passages are found in the aforementioned books, it is clear that they are as reliable as those (used) by the Hebrews and by us.} Jedoch auf mein Schreiben erhielt ich von ihnen daru%ber keine Antwort. {But I have not received any answer from him in response to my letter/note/inquiry.} Einen geeigneten Mann, den ich schicken ko%nnte, habe ich aber nicht. {But I don't have a suitable person whom I can send.} Das ist in meinem [20] Herzen wie Feuer, das in meinen Knochen brennt und glu%ht. {It is in my heart like fire, in my bones it burns and glows.} Bete fu%r mich. {Pray for me, I'm in bad shape! ... etc.} //end//
