Baptism Traditions (Mk, Mt, Lk, Jn; see GHebrews, GEbionites) Take special notice of: Editorial perspectives [e.g. GJohn's focus on "witness"; GLk's treatment of John B] Textual issues [the words of the heavenly voice in Luke; John B's food] The relationship of "Markan" and "Q" materials [did Mark have acess to "Q" traditions at this point?] The person and message of John Baptizer [note Josephus AJ 18.116ff and the Slavonic Josephus materials; was GEbionites adjusted to special eating preoccupations?] The depiction of the relationship between John B and Joshua/Jesus [what impact did John B have apart from "Christian" connections?] The heavenly apparition and voice traditions [inquire into "fire/light on the water" traditions; note focus in GHebrews on Jesus as "rest"; to whom is the voice addressed? what is it's message/point?] Mk 1: 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Mk 1: 2 Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the Mk 1: 2 prophet, Mk 1: 2 "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Mk 1: 2 who shall prepare thy way; Mk 1: 3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Mk 1: 3 Prepare the way of the Lord, Mk 1: 3 make his paths straight -- " Mk 1: 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, Mk 1: 4 preaching a baptism of repentance for the Mk 1: 5 forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all Mk 1: 5 the country of Judea, and all the people of Mk 1: 5 Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the Mk 1: 6 river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was Mk 1: 6 clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather Mk 1: 6 girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild Mk 1: 7 honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he Mk 1: 7 who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals Mk 1: 8 I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have Mk 1: 8 baptized you with water; but he will baptize you Mk 1: 9 with the Holy Spirit." Mk 1: 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Mk 1:10 Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Mk 1:10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately Mk 1:10 he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit Mk 1:11 descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came Mk 1:11 from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I Mk 1:12 am well pleased." Mk 1:12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the Mk 1:13 wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty Mk 1:13 days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild Mk 1:14 beasts; and the angels ministered to him. Mk 1:14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Mk 1:15 Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, Mk 1:15 "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is Mk 1:16 at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." ... Mt 3: 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching Mt 3: 2 in the wilderness of Judea, "Repent, for the Mt 3: 3 kingdom of heaven is at hand." For this is he who Mt 3: 3 was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, Mt 3: 3 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Mt 3: 3 Prepare the way of the Lord, Mt 3: 3 make his paths straight." Mt 3: 4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a Mt 3: 4 leather girdle around his waist; and his food was Mt 3: 5 locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Mt 3: 5 Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about Mt 3: 6 the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the Mt 3: 7 river Jordan, confessing their sins. Mt 3: 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Mt 3: 7 Sad'ducees coming for baptism, he said to them, Mt 3: 7 "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from Mt 3: 8 the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits Mt 3: 9 repentance, and do not presume to say to Mt 3: 9 yourselves, `We have Abraham as our father'; for I Mt 3: 9 tell you, God is able from these stones to raise Mt 3:10 up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid Mt 3:10 to the root of the trees; every tree therefore Mt 3:10 that does not bear good fruit is cut down and Mt 3:11 thrown into the fire. Mt 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but Mt 3:11 he who is coming after me is mightier than I, Mt 3:11 whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will Mt 3:12 baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Mt 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will Mt 3:12 clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat Mt 3:12 into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with Mt 3:13 unquenchable fire." Mt 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to Mt 3:14 John, to be baptized by him. John would have Mt 3:14 prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by Mt 3:15 you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered Mt 3:15 him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for Mt 3:15 us to fulfil all righteousness." Then he Mt 3:16 consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up Mt 3:16 immediately from the water, and behold, the Mt 3:16 heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God Mt 3:17 descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and Mt 3:17 lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my Mt 4: 1 beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." Mt 4: 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the Mt 4: 2 wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he Mt 4: 2 fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward Mt 4: 3 he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to .... Lk 3: 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Lk 3: 1 Tiber'i-us Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor Lk 3: 1 of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Lk 3: 1 his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Lk 3: 1 Iturae'a and Trachoni'tis, and Lysa'ni-as tetrarch Lk 3: 2 of Abile'ne, in the high-priesthood of Annas and Lk 3: 2 Ca'iaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Lk 3: 3 Zechari'ah in the wilderness; and he went into all Lk 3: 3 the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism Lk 3: 4 of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it Lk 3: 4 is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the Lk 3: 4 prophet, Lk 3: 4 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Lk 3: 4 Prepare the way of the Lord, Lk 3: 4 make his paths straight. Lk 3: 5 Every valley shall be filled, Lk 3: 5 and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, Lk 3: 5 and the crooked shall be made straight, Lk 3: 5 and the rough ways shall be made smooth; Lk 3: 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." Lk 3: 7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came Lk 3: 7 out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Lk 3: 8 Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Lk 3: 8 Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not Lk 3: 8 begin to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as Lk 3: 8 our father'; for I tell you, God is able from Lk 3: 9 these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even Lk 3: 9 now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; Lk 3: 9 every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit Lk 3:10 is cut down and thrown into the fire." Lk 3:10 And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall Lk 3:11 we do?" And he answered them, "He who has two Lk 3:11 coats, let him share with him who has none; and he Lk 3:12 who has food, let him do likewise." Tax collectors Lk 3:12 also came to be baptized, and said to him, Lk 3:13 "Teacher, what shall we do?" And he said to them, Lk 3:14 "Collect no more than is appointed you." Soldiers Lk 3:14 also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he Lk 3:14 said to them, "Rob no one by violence or by false Lk 3:15 accusation, and be content with your wages." Lk 3:15 As the people were in expectation, and all men Lk 3:15 questioned in their hearts concerning John, Lk 3:16 whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered Lk 3:16 them all, "I baptize you with water; but he who is Lk 3:16 mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose Lk 3:16 sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize Lk 3:17 you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His Lk 3:17 winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his Lk 3:17 threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his Lk 3:17 granary, but the chaff he will burn with Lk 3:18 unquenchable fire." Lk 3:18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached Lk 3:19 good news to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, Lk 3:19 who had been reproved by him for Hero'di-as, his Lk 3:19 brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Lk 3:20 Herod had done, added this to them all, that he Lk 3:21 shut up John in prison. Lk 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and Lk 3:21 when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, Lk 3:22 the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit Lk 3:22 descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and Lk 3:22 a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Lk 3:23 Son; with thee I am well pleased." Lk 3:23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about Lk 3:23 thirty years of age, being the son (as was Lk 3:24 supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of .... Jn 1:19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jn 1:19 Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to Jn 1:20 ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, he did not Jn 1:21 deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." And Jn 1:21 they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He Jn 1:21 said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he Jn 1:22 answered, "No." They said to him then, "Who are Jn 1:22 you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. Jn 1:23 What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am Jn 1:23 the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make Jn 1:23 straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Jn 1:24 Isaiah said." Jn 1:25 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. Jn 1:25 They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if Jn 1:25 you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Jn 1:26 prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with Jn 1:26 water; but among you stands one whom you do not Jn 1:27 know, even he who comes after me, the thong of Jn 1:28 whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." This took Jn 1:28 place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was Jn 1:29 baptizing. Jn 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, Jn 1:29 and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away Jn 1:30 the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, Jn 1:30 `After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he Jn 1:31 was before me.' I myself did not know him; but for Jn 1:31 this I came baptizing with water, that he might be Jn 1:32 revealed to Israel." And John bore witness, "I saw Jn 1:32 the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it Jn 1:33 remained on him. I myself did not know him; but he Jn 1:33 who sent me to baptize with water said to me, `He Jn 1:33 on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, Jn 1:34 this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And Jn 1:34 I have seen and have borne witness that this is Jn 1:35 the Son of God." Jn 1:35 The next day again John was standing with two Jn 1:36 of his disciples; and he looked at Jesus as he Jn 1:37 walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The Jn 1:37 two disciples heard him say this, and they Jn 1:38 followed Jesus. Jesus turned, and saw them Jn 1:38 following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" Jn 1:38 And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Jn 1:39 Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to Jn 1:39 them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he Jn 1:39 was staying; and they stayed with him that day, Jn 1:40 for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two Jn 1:40 who heard John speak, and followed him, was Jn 1:41 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his Jn 1:41 brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Jn 1:42 Messiah" (which means Christ). He brought him to Jn 1:42 Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "So you are Jn 1:42 Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" Jn 1:43 (which means Peter). Jn 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. Jn 1:44 And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." The Transfiguration and Similar "Voice from Heaven" Accounts Some things to consider: Crossfertilization with baptism accounts? Relation to "post resurrection" traditions? Functions in the present literary contexts. Mk 8:27 And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the Mk 8:27 villages of Caesare'a Philip'pi; and on the way he Mk 8:28 asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" Mk 8:28 And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others Mk 8:29 say, Eli'jah; and others one of the prophets." And Mk 8:29 he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Mk 8:30 Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he Mk 8:31 charged them to tell no one about him. Mk 8:31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man Mk 8:31 must suffer many things, and be rejected by the Mk 8:31 elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and Mk 8:32 be killed, and after three days rise again. And he Mk 8:32 said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began Mk 8:33 to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his Mk 8:33 disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind Mk 8:33 me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but Mk 8:34 of men." Mk 8:34 And he called to him the multitude with his Mk 8:34 disciples, and said to them, "If any man would Mk 8:34 come after me, let him deny himself and take up Mk 8:35 his cross and follow me. For whoever would save Mk 8:35 his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life Mk 8:36 for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For Mk 8:36 what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world Mk 8:37 and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in Mk 8:38 return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me Mk 8:38 and of my words in this adulterous and sinful Mk 8:38 generation, of him will the Son of man also be Mk 8:38 ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father Mk 9: 1 with the holy angels." And he said to them, Mk 9: 1 "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here Mk 9: 1 who will not taste death before they see that the Mk 9: 2 kingdom of God has come with power." Mk 9: 2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter Mk 9: 2 and James and John, and led them up a high Mk 9: 2 mountain apart by themselves; and he was Mk 9: 3 transfigured before them, and his garments became Mk 9: 3 glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth Mk 9: 4 could bleach them. And there appeared to them Mk 9: 4 Eli'jah with Moses; and they were talking to Mk 9: 5 Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is Mk 9: 5 well that we are here; let us make three booths, Mk 9: 5 one for you and one for Moses and one for Mk 9: 6 Eli'jah." For he did not know what to say, for Mk 9: 7 they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud Mk 9: 7 overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the Mk 9: 8 cloud, "This is my beloved Son; listen to him." Mk 9: 8 And suddenly looking around they no longer saw any Mk 9: 9 one with them but Jesus only. Mk 9: 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he Mk 9: 9 charged them to tell no one what they had seen, Mk 9: 9 until the Son of man should have risen from the Mk 9:10 dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, Mk 9:11 questioning what the rising from the dead meant. Mk 9:11 And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Mk 9:12 first Eli'jah must come?" And he said to them, Mk 9:12 "Eli'jah does come first to restore all things; Mk 9:12 and how is it written of the Son of man, that he Mk 9:12 should suffer many things and be treated with Mk 9:13 contempt? But I tell you that Eli'jah has come, Mk 9:13 and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it Mk 9:14 is written of him." Mk 9:14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw Mk 9:14 a great crowd about them, and scribes arguing with Mk 9:15 them. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw .... Mt 16:13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Mt 16:13 Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who Mt 16:14 do men say that the Son of man is?" And they said, Mt 16:14 "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, Mt 16:15 and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He Mt 16:16 said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Mt 16:16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son Mt 16:17 of the living God." And Jesus answered him, Mt 16:17 "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and Mt 16:17 blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father Mt 16:18 who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, Mt 16:18 and on this rock I will build my church, and the Mt 16:19 powers of death shall not prevail against it. I Mt 16:19 will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, Mt 16:19 and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Mt 16:19 heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be Mt 16:20 loosed in heaven." Then he strictly charged the Mt 16:21 disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Mt 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show his Mt 16:21 disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer Mt 16:21 many things from the elders and chief priests and Mt 16:21 scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be Mt 16:22 raised. And Peter took him and began to rebuke Mt 16:22 him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never Mt 16:23 happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter, Mt 16:23 "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; Mt 16:24 for you are not on the side of God, but of men." Mt 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man Mt 16:24 would come after me, let him deny himself and take Mt 16:25 up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save Mt 16:25 his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life Mt 16:26 for my sake will find it. For what will it profit Mt 16:26 a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits Mt 16:26 his life? Or what shall a man give in return for Mt 16:27 his life? For the Son of man is to come with his Mt 16:27 angels in the glory of his Father, and then he Mt 16:28 will repay every man for what he has done. Truly, Mt 16:28 I say to you, there are some standing here who Mt 16:28 will not taste death before they see the Son of Mt 17: 1 man coming in his kingdom." Mt 17: 1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter Mt 17: 1 and James and John his brother, and led them up a Mt 17: 2 high mountain apart. And he was transfigured Mt 17: 2 before them, and his face shone like the sun, and Mt 17: 3 his garments became white as light. And behold, Mt 17: 3 there appeared to them Moses and Eli'jah, talking Mt 17: 4 with him. And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is Mt 17: 4 well that we are here; if you wish, I will make Mt 17: 4 three booths here, one for you and one for Moses Mt 17: 5 and one for Eli'jah." He was still speaking, when Mt 17: 5 lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice Mt 17: 5 from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with Mt 17: 6 whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the Mt 17: 6 disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, Mt 17: 7 and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and Mt 17: 8 touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." Mt 17: 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no Mt 17: 9 one but Jesus only. Mt 17: 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Mt 17: 9 Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, Mt 17:10 until the Son of man is raised from the dead." And Mt 17:10 the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes Mt 17:11 say that first Eli'jah must come?" He replied, Mt 17:11 "Eli'jah does come, and he is to restore all Mt 17:12 things; but I tell you that Eli'jah has already Mt 17:12 come, and they did not know him, but did to him Mt 17:12 whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will Mt 17:13 suffer at their hands." Then the disciples Mt 17:13 understood that he was speaking to them of John Mt 17:14 the Baptist. Mt 17:14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up Mt 17:15 to him and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have Mt 17:15 mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he ... Lk 9:17 all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what Lk 9:18 was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces. Lk 9:18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone Lk 9:18 the disciples were with him; and he asked them, Lk 9:19 "Who do the people say that I am?" And they Lk 9:19 answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Lk 9:19 Eli'jah; and others, that one of the old prophets Lk 9:20 has risen." And he said to them, "But who do you Lk 9:20 say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of Lk 9:21 God." But he charged and commanded them to tell Lk 9:22 this to no one, saying, "The Son of man must Lk 9:22 suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders Lk 9:22 and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and Lk 9:23 on the third day be raised." Lk 9:23 And he said to all, "If any man would come Lk 9:23 after me, let him deny himself and take up his Lk 9:24 cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save Lk 9:24 his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life Lk 9:25 for my sake, he will save it. For what does it Lk 9:25 profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses Lk 9:26 or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me Lk 9:26 and of my words, of him will the Son of man be Lk 9:26 ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory Lk 9:27 of the Father and of the holy angels. But I tell Lk 9:27 you truly, there are some standing here who will Lk 9:27 not taste death before they see the kingdom of Lk 9:28 God." Lk 9:28 Now about eight days after these sayings he Lk 9:28 took with him Peter and John and James, and went Lk 9:29 up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, Lk 9:29 the appearance of his countenance was altered, and Lk 9:30 his raiment became dazzling white. And behold, two Lk 9:31 men talked with him, Moses and Eli'jah, who Lk 9:31 appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, Lk 9:32 which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter Lk 9:32 and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, Lk 9:32 and when they wakened they saw his glory and the Lk 9:33 two men who stood with him. And as the men were Lk 9:33 parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it Lk 9:33 is well that we are here; let us make three Lk 9:33 booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Lk 9:34 Eli'jah" -- not knowing what he said. As he said Lk 9:34 this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they Lk 9:35 were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice Lk 9:35 came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Lk 9:36 Chosen; listen to him!" And when the voice had Lk 9:36 spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept Lk 9:36 silence and told no one in those days anything of Lk 9:37 what they had seen. Lk 9:37 On the next day, when they had come down from Lk 9:38 the mountain, a great crowd met him. And behold, a Lk 9:38 man from the crowd cried, "Teacher, I beg you to Lk 9:39 look upon my son, for he is my only child; and Lk 9:39 behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries Lk 9:39 out; it convulses him till he foams, and shatters Lk 9:40 him, and will hardly leave him. And I begged your Lk 9:41 disciples to cast it out, but they could not." Lk 9:41 Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse Lk 9:41 generation, how long am I to be with you and bear Lk 9:42 with you? Bring your son here." While he was Lk 9:42 coming, the demon tore him and convulsed him. But Lk 9:42 Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the Lk 9:43 boy, and gave him back to his father. And all were Lk 9:43 astonished at the majesty of God. Lk 9:43 But while they were all marveling at Lk 9:44 everything he did, he said to his disciples, "Let Lk 9:44 these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Lk 9:45 man is to be delivered into the hands of men." But Lk 9:45 they did not understand this saying, and it was Lk 9:45 concealed from them, that they should not perceive Lk 9:45 it; and they were afraid to ask him about this Lk 9:46 saying. Lk 9:46 And an argument arose among them as to which Lk 9:47 of them was the greatest. But when Jesus perceived .... Jn 12:12 The next day a great crowd who had come to the Jn 12:13 feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So Jn 12:13 they took branches of palm trees and went out to Jn 12:13 meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who Jn 12:13 comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Jn 12:14 Israel!" And Jesus found a young ass and sat upon Jn 12:15 it; as it is written, Jn 12:15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; Jn 12:15 behold, your king is coming, Jn 12:15 sitting on an ass's colt!" Jn 12:16 His disciples did not understand this at first; Jn 12:16 but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered Jn 12:16 that this had been written of him and had been Jn 12:17 done to him. The crowd that had been with him when Jn 12:17 he called Laz'arus out of the tomb and raised him Jn 12:18 from the dead bore witness. The reason why the Jn 12:18 crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had Jn 12:19 done this sign. The Pharisees then said to one Jn 12:19 another, "You see that you can do nothing; look, Jn 12:20 the world has gone after him." Jn 12:20 Now among those who went up to worship at the Jn 12:21 feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, Jn 12:21 who was from Beth-sa'ida in Galilee, and said to Jn 12:22 him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and Jn 12:22 told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jn 12:23 Jesus. And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come Jn 12:24 for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly, truly, Jn 12:24 I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into Jn 12:24 the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it Jn 12:25 dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life Jn 12:25 loses it, and he who hates his life in this world Jn 12:26 will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves Jn 12:26 me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall Jn 12:26 my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Jn 12:27 Father will honor him. Jn 12:27 "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I Jn 12:27 say? `Father, save me from this hour'? No, for Jn 12:28 this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, Jn 12:28 glorify thy name." Then a voice came from heaven, Jn 12:28 "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it Jn 12:29 again." The crowd standing by heard it and said Jn 12:29 that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has Jn 12:30 spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has Jn 12:31 come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the Jn 12:31 judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of Jn 12:32 this world be cast out; and I, when I am lifted up Jn 12:33 from the earth, will draw all men to myself." He Jn 12:34 said this to show by what death he was to die. The Jn 12:34 crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law Jn 12:34 that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say Jn 12:34 that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Jn 12:35 Son of man?" Jesus said to them, "The light is Jn 12:35 with you for a little longer. Walk while you have Jn 12:35 the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who Jn 12:35 walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. Jn 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, Jn 12:36 that you may become sons of light." Jn 12:36 When Jesus had said this, he departed and hid Jn 12:37 himself from them. Though he had done so many Jn 12:37 signs before them, yet they did not believe in Jn 12:38 him; it was that the word spoken by the prophet .... 2Pe 1:12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of 2Pe 1:12 these things, though you know them and are 2Pe 1:13 established in the truth that you have. I think it 2Pe 1:13 right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you 2Pe 1:14 by way of reminder, since I know that the putting 2Pe 1:14 off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus 2Pe 1:15 Christ showed me. And I will see to it that after 2Pe 1:15 my departure you may be able at any time to recall 2Pe 1:16 these things. 2Pe 1:16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths 2Pe 1:16 when we made known to you the power and coming of 2Pe 1:16 our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of 2Pe 1:17 his majesty. For when he received honor and glory 2Pe 1:17 from God the Father and the voice was borne to him 2Pe 1:17 by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, 2Pe 1:18 with whom I am well pleased," we heard this voice 2Pe 1:18 borne from heaven, for we were with him on the 2Pe 1:19 holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word made 2Pe 1:19 more sure. You will do well to pay attention to 2Pe 1:19 this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until 2Pe 1:19 the day dawns and the morning star rises in your 2Pe 1:20 hearts. First of all you must understand this, 2Pe 1:20 that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's 2Pe 1:21 own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came 2Pe 1:21 by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy 2Pe 2: 1 Spirit spoke from God. //end//
