F      Milan, Bibl Ambr., S.P. 51 (earlier A. 147 inf.). V. Century. The corrections in F come from two distinct periods. The codex was first of all corrected by several hands whose common characteristic were a yellow or brown tint and majuscle script, known in the edition as Fa. In medieval times the codex was throughout retraced by a restorer. This restorer also made cor­rections and is known in the ediiton as Fb. The various Fb hands are only distinguished as Fb1 Fb2 when the hands can be separated in time. When an error occurred in the retracing by Fb this is called Fs. Erasures which can hardly be assigned to any corrector are simply called Fc. Most of the marginalia come from Fb, and often erasure dots are used to designate the relevant text. These are not recognized in the edition. As in Exod and Lev citations of ms and the Fathers were not given according to texttypes. This is actually easier, since the Vetus Latina in Numbers in contrast to Genesis and Deutero­nomy show a much more unified textual witness (both in mss and the Fathers). Beyond that, the independent renderings of the Greek hexaplaric text, i.e., LaO in Genesis as well as the renderings of PsPhil (LaX in Gen) are noted. The designation La is used when all Vetus Latina witnesses agree.

2. The Ethiopic Version (Aeth)

 

            The collation of the Ethiopic version of Num was made according to Dillmann’s edition and according to the text of cod. M. for both, as well as for cod.R which was not collated, comp Genesis 43-44. Cod.P. (cf Deutero­nomium 31) unfortunately was not available for me. Furthermore, the passage 5,11 προς-6,14 αμναδα could not be collated for AethM, since that page was not in the copy which I had.

 3. The Arabic Version = Arab

 

            See Genesis 44-46.

4. The Armenian Version = Arm

 

            The old Armenian version was collated from the Zohrab edition of the

year 1805. Arm is a good witness for the Byzantine text, (cf THGN), but secondarily also for the O recension. As Claude Cox showed in his critical study on the Armenian text of Deuteronomy, Arm depends on a Greek parent text which represented the Byzantine texttype, but was also strongly influenced by the hexaplaric text. This parent text came from Constantinople, and was probably intentional brought to Armenia in order to serve as parent to the Armenian translation. See also Genesis 46-47.

 

5. The Coptic Versions = Co

As for Deuteronomy (cf 31-32) two mss were collated for the Bo text:

                        Only a small papyrus fragment of Fa is preserved: London, Brit. Mus., Or.4717(21) published as No.1221 in W.E.Crum, Catalogue of the Coptic Mss in the British Museum, London 1905. Contents: 5,15-18. Fragmentary.


  c) The Sahidic Version = Sa

 

            The Sahidic text for Num is complete in Sa12. Various pages of the Ms are barely legible; so no e silentio conclusions are valid. Beyond this ms there are 11 more mss, which, however, contain only smaller or larger fragments.

              It is quite unnecessary to reaffirm the  great value of the Syro-hexapla as a witness to the hexaplaric recension. As regards to the question of the character of the Syh as translation see in particular Larry Perkins, The Place of the Syro-Hexapla in the Textual Tradition of the Septuagint of Deuteronomy (Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Toronto 1980); see also Genesis 52.


III. Printed Editions

 

            Especially significant are the three great oldest Bibles: Aldina (Ald) Complu­tensis (Compl) and Sixtina (Sixt). These have all been fully collated in this edition. The principles according to which these are cited are given below. Of the three the Sixt has been extensively reprinted. In this edition only the original texts were consulted.

 1. Aldina (Ald)

 

                        Ald is particularly closely related in Numbers to 68*. Ald is cited in the edition only when its text does not agree with that of 68*.

 2. Complutensis (Compl)

 

            The text of Compl is based to a large extent on 19*, though it seems that the mss 56 and 129 were used as well. Compl is only noted in the Apparatus when it does not agree with 19*.


 3. Sixtina (Sixt)

 

            Sixt is based on a large number of mss, but especially on Cod. B. It is cited only when it does not agree with B.

 4. Grabe (Gr)

 

            See Genesis 53.

 5. Holmes-Parsons (H.-P.)

 

            See Genesis 54.

 6. Lagarde

 

            The text of Lagarde is his reconstructed text of the Lucianic Recension of Genesis to Esther. The edition is not cited in this edition.


7. Brooke-McLean (Br.-M.)

 

            See Genesis 54-55. The edition Numbers - Deuteronomy was published in 1911.

 8. Rahlfs (Ra)

 

            Rahlfs is a manual edition of the Greek Old Testament. In Numbers its text is essentially based on a comparison of Codd. A and B. A few hexaplaric plusses have also been noted.

 

B The Text History                         

 

  The text history has been thoroughly discussed in J.W.Wevers THGN. Only such information will be given here which is necessary for the use of this edition.

 

 I. Recensions and Textgroups in the LXX-tradition

            The C*ʾ-Group presents a widely distributed text type, which is repre­sented by Catena mss. Except for mss 16-46-131 all the witnesses of this group are catena texts. On the other hand, four catena mss could not be assigned to C*ʾ. Ms 646 is a mixed text type which was indeed influenced by the text of C*ʾ, but has so many differences that it wouldhave been inappropriately assigned to it. Ms 628 belongs to the z-group, whereas 730 belongs to the s-group. Ms. 424 does actually represent the C*ʾ-type, but its text is so abbreviated that it could hardly be assigned to it, but was put into the codices mixti group.

 

3. The b-group

II. The younger Greek Versions

 

            For the character of the second Apparatus see Genesis 59-60. The catena

texts were systematically investigated for non-LXX readings, which were all excerpted. On this basis a text critical evaluation was made, and only the readings which had textual value were then included in the Apparatus. Readings which could be verified in all the C-groups were noted as C*ʾ; the notation of the sub groups of C were used whenever a reading was established only in one or the other sub-group. In contrast to the first apparatus these notations do not mean that all the members of the group attest to the reading. Rather it means that a reading could be verified in at least two members of a subgroup. Furthermore, the source of the witness is also shown; i.e. a reading designated as C*ʾ means that it is a marginal notation, whereas Ccomm refers to a reading found in a commentary excerpt, and Ccat, for all other readings within a catena text. Should the source of a comm reading be known, only the name of the Father is given. As for the catena texts not in the C*ʾ-group, these are cited in the Apparatus only if additional material is given.

            As to the tradition of the readings which are found in the second apparatus is concerned, the same surprising picture emerges as was already noted in the Genesis edition, viz. that the O-text was not well represented.

            Syh is an exception, with 146 cases appearing in the Apparatus. The others are divided as follows: 49 cases in 58, 20 in 707, while 376 has only 4 cases. With the Fathers the situation is rather similar. One would expect particularly those who favour the hexaplaric text would have had ample cases. The summary shows meagre usage: Procop attests to 17 cases, Eus 9, Barh - 3, Tht 2 and Or only 1. No hexaplaric readings were found in any of the other Fathers.

            For the majority of the mss which do contain any hexaplaric material, outside of those of the O mss, very few were found. Of all the mss 128 has the most, 34, ms 108 ony 25, and 54 most of which are in  the text, 24 cases. Beyond that none has over 15 cases.

            The best source for non-LXX readings among the mss in Numbers are the pair, M-416, with 64 and 57 cases of marginalia resp. Mss of the C*ʾ-groups show 57 readings, but the best source for hexaplaric materials are found in the s-group: 489 cases in ms 344; 215 in 130, 131 in 346; 186 in 321, and 106 readings in ms  85.

            Mention should also be made of Fb with its 62 readings. These, however, do not in the majority of cases stem from the hexapla, but from an as yet unknown source.

 C Re this Edition

 

            The general layout of the Genesis edition was retained for Numbers as well. The changes over against earlier volumes of the Göttingen Septuaginta are in part repeated from the Genesis volume.
