The story of The Exorcist has been criticized as a
portrayal of evil on the grounds that it doesnt make sense for the
Devil to waste his time on a little girl when he could be attacking
someone with real power (a politician or a talk show host). Take the
other side. Why might the demon be expected to act this way? How is
the demon portrayed consistent with a particular view of evil?
Look at the story of the Gerasene demoniac (Luke 8.26-39 // Matt 8.31ff
// Mark 5.1-20). How do the details of the story match up with what we
have learned about demon folklore and demonic possession? How do they
differ? In your opinion, is the biblical story drawing from folklore
traditions about demons or is it the reverse (explain)?
