Using the Lehigh List Server

What is ListServ?

Like most electronic discussion groups, IOUDAIOS-L is managed by a listserver program called ListProc. The ListProc program at Lehigh University is LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU. Like a good butler, LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU handles all of our "household business". If you want to subscribe to IOUDAIOS-L, leave the group, review the membership list, or temporarily halt your e- mail while on vacation, you must tell LISTSERV what it is that you wish to do.

How to Communicate

The way to communicate with LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU is to write it a letter. That is, you send a normal e-mail message, except that you address it to LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU instead of to a person. Your message will be simply the command that you wish to give (see below) -- nothing more. No, LISTSERV cannot actually read messages (a love note would be rudely returned), but it is trained to recognize the command keywords embedded within any message it receives. So, sending your command within a mail message addressed to LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU will achieve the same results as sending an interactive message. For example, to subscribe to IOUDAIOS send a message to LISTSERV@LEHIGH.EDU with the following text:

SUBSCRIBE IOUDAIOS your name

Commands

Other than the SUBSCRIBE command, the most important "housekeeping" commands for our butler are:

REVIEW IOUDAIOS-L (to see the membership list)
INDEX IOUDAIOS-L (to see the list of available files)
QUERY IOUDAIOS-L (to see the status of your subscription)
SET IOUDAIOS-L MAIL POSTPONE (to withhold mail indefinitely)
SET IOUDAIOS-L MAIL ACK (to receive mail again, after break)
SET IOUDAIOS-L MAIL NOACK (to request that you not receive copies of your postings)
SET IOUDAIOS-L MAIL DIGEST (to have the LISTSERV make a catena of messages that are sent to you periodically)?
SIGNOFF IOUDAIOS-L (to request deletion from the list)
HELP (to request a full list of commands)

The default for initial subscription is ACK, meaning that you will receive copies of any message that you post to the list.

These commands should ONLY be sent to LISTSERV, and issued in an e-mail message. In case of removal from the list, your command is not automatically executed, but is rather forwarded to us for action.

For Further Information

Much more information is available at the CREN ListProcessor web site. The User Manual is particularly informative.
