Michael Herzfeld's new book is Fractured Eternities: Living with History in Modern Rome. In his words, "This is an account of life in what used to be a predominantly artisanal quarter in the center of Rome's 'historic center.'" The speaker looks at what happens when ideas of neoliberal market economics and state bureaucracy intrude in the intimacies of social life and how this affects perceptions of identity, history, and social solidarity, especially given the powerful localism that makes Rome an eccentric capital city in the larger European context.
