Future Tense

A. Read the following sentences.

É. hu& kale rmI=. I will play tomorrow.

Ê. Ame kale rmI=u&. We (exclusive) will play tomorrow.

Ë. Aap8e kale rmI=u&. We (inclusive) will play tomorrow.

Ì. tu& kale rm=e. You (sg.) will play tomorrow.

Í. tme kale rm=o. You (pl.) will play tomorrow.

Î. tu& kale rm=e. He / She will play tomorrow.

Ï. teAo kale rm=e. They will play tomorrow.

The shape of the future tense marker changes in terms of subject and number as the table below shows.

Singular Plural

1st person -;= -;=u&

2nd person -=e -=o

3rd person -=e -=e

Exercise 1 Translate the following sentences in Gujarati.

  1. Mahesh will read a book tomorrow.
  2. Lila will go to New York.
  3. He will come to Philadelphia.
  4. I will eat a mango.
  5. You (sg.) will sing a song.

B. Making negative sentences in future tense is very easy: Use nih or nhI& (note the spelling difference) immediately after verb. Examples:

É. hu& kale rmI= nih. I will not play tomorrow.

Ê. Ame kale rmI=u& nih. We (exclusive) will not play tomorrow.

Ë. Aap8e kale rmI=u& nih. We (inclusive) will not play tomorrow.

Ì. tu& kale rm=e nih. You (sg.) will not play tomorrow.

Í. tme kale rm=o nih. You (pl.) will not play tomorrow.

Î. te kale rm=e nih. He / She will not play tomorrow.

Ï. teAo kale rm=e nih. They will not play tomorrow.
