The Penn Language Center (PLC) serves language instruction needs that are not covered within the regular language programs. The PLC's main objective is to expand and enrich Penn's language offerings in the less commonly taught languages and languages for special purposes.

Most languages are taught in a two-year cycle of four semester courses and are designed to raise the student with no prior knowledge of the language to a level of intermediate competence in the four basic functions: speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. On completion of each course, students will receive a course grade and, where available, a proficiency rating.
For more information, please contact PLC at Lauder-Fischer Hall, 4th floor, 898-6039.

Quechua
Elementary Quechua I and II will be offered at The University of Pennsylvania in Summer 1998.* These courses are open to graduate students, advanced undergraduates, professionals and other interested individuals. They will be taught by Serafin Coronel-Molina, a native speaker of Quechua, using a combination of traditional and multimedia texts. The course has been developed in close consultation with Dr. Nancy H. Hornberger of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.

Elementary Quechua I (LING 140 for undergraduates; LING 508 for graduates) will be offered in the first summer session (May 19 to June 26, 1998), and will meet five days a week from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Elementary Quechua II (LING 141 for undergraduates; LING 509 for graduates) will be offered in the second summer session (June 29 to August 7, 1998), and will also meet five days a week from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Elementary Quechua I is intended for students with no previous study experience in Quechua. It introduces students to the language and culture of the Quechua people. This is the language that was spoken by the ancient Incas and is still spoken today by more than 10 million speakers throughout the Andean countries of South America. The variety taught will be from the Southern Quechua family spoken in Peru. The course will promote the development of the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, providing a good practical command of oral and written skills appropriate for everyday situations. In addition, classwork will include discussion of native Andean culture,as well as the changing face of Quechua culture in light of recent migration trends. Elementary Quechua II is a continuation of Elementary Quechua I for students who have taken the first session course or who have previously studied Southern Peruvian Quechua at the beginning level. The format will be the same as for Elementary Quechua I, with continued building of the four essential language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Grammatical structures will be continually reviewed throughout this course, while a rich input of material in Quechua is provided with the goal of increasing the range of vocabulary and linguistic structures as well as knowledge of the culture.
