Bringing Pragmatics into Langauge Class Rooms. Share your experience with everyone --------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Vasu Renganathan Email: vasur@ccat.sas.upenn.edu Message: To begin with, let me discuss something about "greetings" in Tamil. Greetings in Tamil is considered very formal, and often times it is considered "a Westernized habit". Only the educated professionals such as Tamil professors, Tamil graduate students greet each other in schools and in other formal contexts. The word "vaNakkam" in Tamil means "greetings", and it is a common term for all occasions - equivalent to "good morning", "good evening" etc. I can't use this word with my brother, close friends, close relatives etc. If I do, they will definitely laugh at me, and would assume that something went wrong with me. However, I can use this word with my teachers and collegues. In fact, some of my teachers never liked it at all! Whenever I say "vaNakkam" to one of my professors, he would respond "ummm.." which means Okay. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Alwiya Omar Email: asomar@ling.upenn.edu Message: In Kiswahili, the offical language of Tanzania and Kenya, greetings are very important as well. The age factor plays an important role. When one encounters a person who is older a respectful greeting form needs to be used or he or she will appear rude and my even be reminded to greet properly. Greetings can also be lengthy and can include six to eight turns or even more. Participants usually ask each other about their health, their jobs, and about their relatives. Some learners of Kiswahili may resist performing these lengthy greeting turns. Consequently, they may appear rude or unfriendly. They also miss getting more input for practice. Integrating pragmatics in the classroom will enbale learners to be more aware of cultural norms associated with language, their native language as well as the target one. --------------------------------------------------------- Name: A_Fattahi Email: A_FATTAHI@sun.iust.ac.ir Message: As an MA student I think pragmatics is the very essence of language. Unfortunately it is still underresearched. We should persuade researchers to put a back into it, and open new panaromae for future furthur research. The real problem might be la ck of knowledge relating to the very latent aspects, bearings, and facets of applied pragmatics. Please contact me. The most important indication can be seen in a set of polite ways of greetings and discourse turn -taking. In Chinese language, our polite ways of expressions are often concerned with one's daily life. So in foreigner's opinion, Chinese people can be over-polite in that they often ask you about your daily activities. -------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Helen Email: ciela8120@sina.com Message: What is Pragmatic failures?
