Message: The page Basic alphabet would tell you that there are 18 + 5 consonants and 12 vowels. The page Make syllables would tell you how we make syllables. Ideally, Tamil has only 35 letters to learn, and the rest are syllables which are made by a combination of consonants and vowels using special symbols. So, if syllables are taken into account, there would be 23 X 12 = 276 letters (syllables) in Tamil.
