? Transliteration in Tamil

View Tamil through Roman transliteration

The following scheme of transliteration was devised and used in WNTAMIL LaTeX font by Prof. Harold F. Schiffman. Our WebTamil transliteration program also supports this scheme, in addition to the other schemes.

The rationale behind using numbers for Tamil letters is as follows:

2 (two loop n) is used for ¨ because it is ×Àýà ßÃÕ Æ

3 (three loop n) is used for ý because it is ñá ßÃÕ º

5 is used for þ because this sound occurs in Çþß

6 is used for ± because this sound occurs in Èì

7 is used for ° because this sound occurs in Îê

8 is used for ¥ because this sound occurs in Í¥à

4 and 9 are used for øÓ and ª respectively for no specific reason.
