Robert Lamberton, Washington University in St. Louis
"Homer, Porphyry, and his Commentaries"
19 March, 1998
This meeting
will be held on Thursday, 19 March, from 7-9 pm in the Woody Room on the
second floor of the Van Pelt Library at the University of Pennsylvania.
Persons wishing to dine with other participants prior to the meeting
should meet at 6 pm at Logan Hall. (If it is easier
for you, you can also meet us at the old location, Duhring Wing). We
normally eat at the Food Court in the building at 3401 Walnut Street,
although any change of plans will be posted in a note on the outer door to
Duhring Wing.

Reading
Prof. Lamberton encourages everyone to read Porphyry's essay, "Cave of the
Nymphs" before the presentation. This text is the only relevant
text that is easily available in English and also the only one that is not
in fragments. It is available in Westerink's bilingual edition (Porphyry,
The Cave of the Nymphs in the Odyssey, A Revised Text with Translation by
Seminar Classics 609, SUNY Buffalo. Arethusa Monographs No. 1, 1969) and
in the presenter's translation (R. Lamberton, ed. and tr., Porphyry on the
Cave of the Nymphs, Barrytown NY: Station Hill, 1983).
In order to read the Greek correctly, first download and install the Greek
font SPIonic, one of the freeware fonts from
Scholars Press.
