Large folder of Forsberg "Letters from Ethiopia" ORIGINALS -- c. 70 sheets of paper
grey note page "Title:-- Out of Africa" format instructions, etc.
Forsberg book online, p.20 is first letter dated May 18 1934.
It starts with a personal paragraph on the birth of RAK [not included -- MNK omitted 23 sections = [...]]
pp.112-113 missing in MNK typescript (online): Here is what || we know. The United Press in
Addis each week compiles a sheet of the outstanding events and sends it
to each of our Mission stations. Mr. Rohrbaugh is cooperating in this,
and we are helping by sending any reports that may be of interest, when
and if they occur. So you see that what we receive from the United Press
gets printed in your papers anywhere from one to three weeks before we
know what is going on. That's one funny part of the situation. The other
phase is the peace, here in remote Gofa. The predicted banditry and slave-
raiding have not materialized. We have not heard of a single murder, robbery
or bit of slave raiding. And that means a lot, for if there were even
a suggestion of the above it would be multiplied a hundred times in the
telling.
It is said that in this country a strong governor has strong servants.
Dejazmatch Aueba is one of the strongest governers in the country, and it
is no wonder that he left a strong man in his place. Many were the rumors
that his deputy was undesirable, but if the condition of the province
means anything, he must be quite desirable. If the police force of Gofa has
been reduced, there would be revolution and a "crime wave." But of course
Mussolini must civilize Ethiopia.
Mussolini's justification of his venture seems to be that he must civilize
Ethiopia. To support his claims he has gotten out stories of Ethiopian
slavery and "chaotic" conditions with lack of a strong central
government. In the first place conditions in this country can be compared,
item for item, with similar conditions in every modern country. Ethiopia's
sin is probably least of all. It must be remembered that until 40 to 50
years ago Ethiopia consisted of a jungle of separate kingdoms each continually
warring on the other. Brutalities and atrocities were every-day
occurances. Under Menelik, the Amharas went a-conquering and overcame
every tribe in Ethiopia, bringing all to tribute under the "gabbar" system,
with the exception of Jimma. Old timers will tell you that in spite
of their hatred of the tribute system, conditions under the Amharas are
"a hundred hands better" than they were under local tribal kings. Of
course, when the Amharas came in, there were many among them with ulterior
motives, and it was necessary for a new order of rulers to be developed.
Without question His Majesty the emperor Haile Selassie is the greatest
of this new order. When he began instituting reforms, old timers who
wanted to make all they could out of serfs and slaves objected and
talked of revolt. His Majesty did not strike out blindly to make all his
undergovernors and associates do as he dictated. Rather, he began teaching
his "liberal" doctrines to his followers, until he surrounded himself
with many who saw as he did. Prospective men of affairs, members of the
ruling class, were brought into contact with modern affairs. They became
acquainted withe the League of Nations. They were taught the backwardness
of slavery and serfdom. Now Ethiopia has come a long way by herself.
Now for a contrast. Some years ago a certain governor of Gofa was called
to Addis Ababa by the king. It was up to him to make a good impression.
He took some hundred or more of his "gabbars" (serfs), put them in chains,
and marched them along with him. Somewhere between here and Addis Ababa
he sold them all for money. This he presented to the king and made a good
impression ... saying nothing, of course, about the source of the money.
...the source of the money.|| Two months ago ...

18mr2020 photostick arrived, but I couldn't get it to work well --
19mr2020 left stick in MAC all night; it worked this morning! I don't know why.
20mr2020 accessed BBedit on MAC and added a note to MNK-Index on CSM photo scanning, but could not find it again --
because I was looking on the DELL and it is on the MAC to web-facstaff.sas.upenn.edu//www-virgo/www-ccat/data!
I also collated meleth, which is very incomplete, against the full online file and added the missing pages to
the main file.
31mr2020 in the meantime I did more with the Forsberg letter materials, mostly successfully.I'm relearning html
coding. Contacted possible places to donate that material -- SIM, Wheaton, Ethiopia-Eritrea site.
Sent in census info on line. Corona virus precautions widespread. Ran the PhotoStick and it gathered about
60K images, but it is not clear to me how best to access those materials.
06ap2020 heard back from Wheaton -- send more details (how many letters, etc.); finished making Ethiopia file more complete;
rediscovered MNK memorial in my "temp" directory -- did I write it? updates worth doing. CHK talk at MNK funeral?
BBedit working well for my homepage stuff. Do a talk on Forsberg's Ethiopia adventures for Gwynedd's closed TV programs?
Need passport picture, licence renewal picture, etc. Tax date extended to mid July due to corov-19 conditions.
11ap2020 worked on Forsberg letters (scanned, labelled) -- found Dodi's email (d-.f-@sim.org); changed title to
ForsbergsEthiopia; drafted Gwynedd talk (for closed TV during corona virus lockdown period).
02my2020 still in lockdown. Forsberg Talk went ok, but more can be done with those files; heard back from Dodi.
Helped RSK identify Durant sedan in old picture of her grandparents. Income tax date postponed to July.
My back still bothers me, especially in the morning. Blood pressure medicine changed since BP runs high.
Entered masked singer competition at Gwynedd. Need to think of appropriate songs.
08my2020 Enoch Seminar "Life Achievement Award" letter for 29 Je ceremony online
01je2020 retrospect [after running FixMeStick FMSKP00599 on both computers; restarts blank pws on both]
Masked Singer #1(13my) = "April Showers," #2(20my) = "Hate to get up," #3(03je) "Caint Say No"
Situation: Lockdown from COVID-19, 2 week quaranteen after trip to OC on 17my to check wind damage, etc.;
returned on 20my to 14 day quarantine. Unrest in cities over George Floyd murder (29-30my +);
Health-- tested ok for virus; back still hurts, but tolerable; appts with Dr.Chalfin ok. Derm appt postponed.
BP checked AM and PM seems fine (e.g. 130/85 ave).
01je2020 watched Stephanie grad from Bishop Wood HS on closed TV at noon.
04je2020 serious storms yesterday and predicted for today. Eliminated from singer competition yesterday. Ptotests in
cities continue -- "black lives matter, equal justice" themes. Bea grad on TV & FB.
