PPenn Ptolemaic Greek
[Several Greek items are included in the Dra Abu el Naga (DAN) tomb
discoveries, which are dated to the Ptolemaic period by the preserved
formulae in the archive. They are treated as a group below. It is
assumed as an operating principle that cartonnage fragments are
probably Ptolemaic in origin. Closer study of the individual pieces
will be necessary to challenge that assumption. We can expect the
cartonnage materials to produce Demotic and Hieratic fragments as well,
and perhaps sometimes Hieroglyphic (RAK)]

The Penn papyri collections contain a variety of other Greek Ptolemaic fragments, starting with
the several Hibeh
papyri
awarded to Penn by the Egyptian Exploration Fund and housed at the Museum:
- PHib 013 (E03068)
cartonnage,
mummies 69&70; with a treatise on music on the other side
(Hippias? (3 bce) [--]), and documentary materials visible [||], c 250 bce E03068 (PHib 13) -- /other side || (cartonnage design)
- PHib 075 (E02824)
cartonnage, mummy A 15; Letter of Theodorus to the Phylacitae, 232 bce
[--] (other
side [||] mostly blank)
- PHib 079 (E02825)
cartonnage,
mummy 87; Letter of Ptolemaeus to Heraclides, c 260 bce [--]
- PHib 050 (E03069)
cartonnage,
mummy A 16; Letter of Leodamas to Theodorus, c 257 bce [--]
- PHib 096 (E03070A-C)
cartonnage, mummy
A 17; Renunciation of Claims (in duplicate),
259 bce [||]. According to the PHibeh description, fr. a is 10 x 11.7
cm [now labelled "B" at the Museum] and an alternate date of 238 is
also given.(Archives box 242, neg 32098-9, RAK digital images 2009).
- PHib 117 (E03071)
cartonnage, mummy A; Return of Corn Revenue, 239 or 214 bce [--] (other
side [||] blank)
- PHib 156 (E03072)
cartonnage, mummy 117; Acknowledgement by a Naukleros, c 251 bce [--] (other
side [||] blank) [incomplete transcription; 5 frgs, see RAK note on positions]
- PHib 167 (E03073)
cartonnage,
mummy A 9; beginning of Letter from Demophon to Ptolemaeus, c 245 bce [--] (RAK color slide)
Also in the Muesum collection are
numerous other Ptolemaic pieces:
-
E 00510 papyrus, about 20 + 20 Demotic [access restricted] or blank, plus one Greek and at least one Coptic (other side) [unlikely to be from the same provenance, despite the assigned Museum number]
RAK digital images 12my2009 [4599-4610]
second set of RAK digital images 09je2009 [4792-4803]]; 14ap2010 [7754-61]
- E 12937 three pieces, of which 2 are Demotic (access restricted), one Greek (both sides;
start of document -- [year 8] / backside || blurry, perhaps Demotic,
perhaps upside down relative to other side)] ["Mrs. Dillwyn Parish"]; RAK xeroxes from 1970s, digital images 2009;

- "0000-ptolemaic" is a very nicely written letter (RAK xerox), that could not be located in the 2007-2010 photographic explorations by RAK; thus the source is still under investigation
(is it the back of the cartonnage panel E16753,
which is on display (2011)? a note on the RAK xerox says that there was plaster on the
other side) [since the old and unlabelled xerox was made with an 8.5
by 11 inch page as background, the available image has been
"standardized" to that scale (27.9 x 21.6 cm) for comparison purposes,
using a standard cm grid image]
it is not clear how many lines are present above the first fully legible one
