Perl
We'll be learning Perl in this course. Why Perl? Perl is easy to learn and use (in comparison to other programming languages), is the programming language of choice for most CGI programs, is a whiz with text analysis and manipulation, is available on many platforms (including UNIX, MacOS, and Windows), is free, and yet is well documented and supported. Perl can be a very useful tool in the hands of scholars doing research in the Humanities. Not only that, it can also help you earn an income while you do your research (he said with a wry smile).
The use of Perl for interactive web sites is still growing, even as Java is beginning to come into its own (see Tim O'Reilly, "The Importance of Perl"). Java is better for animation and for tasks that can run on a client machine; Perl is better for text and tasks that need to run on servers. And HTML is just text (another smile).
Here are a few useful web sites for Perl.
