Student Honors, Awards, & Activities - 2006-2008

Honors and Awards

This year the Graduate Program in French Studies is pleased to announce the following student honors and awards.

  • Devin Bryson, Jessica Garcés Jenson, Namrata Poddar, and Angelina Stelmach won the Dean's Summer Fellowship in 2008 in the amount of $1,750 each to be used for research purposes.

  • Both Arcana Albright and Elizabeth McCartney were awarded funding ($1,500 and $4,000 respectively) for the summer of 2007 from the Penfield Fellowship to assist with expenses incurred in connection with their dissertation research.

  • Tilden Daniels was awarded the 2007 Walter J. Jensen Fellowship for French Language, Literature and Culture.  This Phi Beta Kappa Fellowship is awarded for six months and is to be used for dissertation research preparation in France.  This award provides Tilden with additional funds of $10,000 to spend on research in Paris, France.

  • François Massonnat was awarded the Dean’s Summer Fellowship in 2007 in the amount of $3,500 to be used for research purposes in Paris, France.

  • Angelina Stelmach was awarded $6,000 by the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Graduate Fellowships for Teaching Excellence for 2007-2008.  This fellowship will assist Angelina in fostering conversations about graduate student teaching.  Angelina was also a recipient of the Dean’s Summer Fellowship in the amount of $3,500 to be used to go to the Dartmouth Summer Program in the summer of 2007.

  • Arcana Albright presented "Zola's La Curée Viewed through the Lens of Photography," Photography Panel, Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium, Indiana University, Bloomington on October 20, 2006. She won the Naomi Schor Memorial Award ($500) for best graduate student paper at this conference.

Activities

  • Arcana Albright presented "Unpacking the Food Fetish in Jean-Philippe Toussaint's La Salle de bain," Thought for Food Panel, 20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium, Texas A&M, College Station on March 22, 2007.

  • Tilden Daniels presented “Henri Michaux’s ‘Cinematic’ Drawing and the Poetics of Existence” at The 20th and 21st Century French and Francophone International Colloquium, Texas A&M University in March 2007. He also presented "Baudelaire's 'Denigration' of Photography: An Image without a Soul" at the Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium, Indiana University in October 2006.
