Michèle H. Richman
Professor of Romance Languages

Relations between literature, anthropology, and social criticism, especially
in the 20th century. She also has a strong interest in the history and
development of critical theory and has taught graduate courses on Proust,
Barthes, various aspects of France and its Others, Anthropology and
Modernism. She has supervised theses on topics including erotic writings
by female authors, theories of the "quotidian" and the writings
of George Perec, theatre and community since Mallarmé and Surrealism.
Her publications include Reading Georges Bataille: Beyond the Gift, Sacred Revolutions: Durkheim and the College de Sociologie, and
articles devoted to Mauss, Bataille, Leiris, and Barthes.
