Transferring Credit for Courses Taken Outside of Penn

All students seeking transfer credit, please note:

  • You will only be able to transfer credit from an accredited, four-year institution located in the United States.
  • While taking the course, you should save all your materials. This includes the syllabus, tests, quizzes, compositions, and course texts.
  • You must either bring a sealed, official copy of your transcript or have an official copy sent directly to the Office of Transfer and Advanced Standing Credit. You will also need to obtain the appropriate transfer credit forms from that office. The office is located in 1 College Hall and is open from 1- 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Students must apply for transfer credit before taking a higher level Penn course. Otherwise, they will not be eligible for transfer credit.

Language Courses (transfer credit for 110 - 140)

  • After obtaining the appropriate forms from the Office of Transfer and Advanced Standing Credit, you must schedule an appointment with the undergraduate coordinator to take the transfer credit multiple choice exam (MCE). The exam is a 60-minute standardized test which covers comprehension of grammar, vocabulary and reading. There is no oral or listening comprehension component.
  • Please note that you may not take the online placement exam as a substitute for the department's transfer credit multiple choice exam.
  • When you take the MCE, bring your materials from the course, the syllabus, and the course description (as well as related courses).
  • You will be notified of your score within two days. The language program director will also be notified.
  • Based on both your score and your course materials, the director will chose whether or not to award credit for the equivalent level at Penn.
  • The undergraduate coordinator will notify you of the director's decision. You must then retrieve the forms and materials from the undergraduate coordinator's office and bring the signed forms back to the Office of Transfer and Advanced Standing Credit in person in order to receive credit.
  • If you wish to continue taking language courses at Penn, you should register for the course above the level for which you received credit. For example, if you received credit for French 130, you should register for French 140.

Upper Level Courses (courses at the 200, 300, or 400 level)

  • After obtaining the appropriate forms from the Office of Transfer and Advanced Standing Credit, you must schedule an appointment with the undergraduate chair.
  • You must bring your course materials, including a syllabus and detailed course description, to your appointment. Based on these materials, the chairperson will chose whether or not to award credit for the equivalent level at Penn.
  • After the undergraduate chair has signed your forms, you must bring them back to the Office of Transfer and Standing Credit in person in order to receive credit.

Please feel free to contact the undergraduate coordinator if you have any questions regarding transfer credit.
