Jorge H. Salessi
Associate Professor of Romance Languages; Director
of Spanish Programs Abroad
19th-century Latin American literature. He
has published numerous articles on sexuality and nation formation,
tango, nationalism and sexuality, photography and the performativity
of gender, homosexual prostitution, and turn-of-the-century
taxonomies of sexual deviance. He is the author of Médicos,
maleantes y maricas: higiene, criminología y homosexualidad
en Argentina 1870-1914 (Beatriz Viterbo Editora, 1995),
a study of hygiene and criminology as State systems to control
homosexual Argentine culture of the turn of the century. He
is also an editor of the Journal of the History of Sexuality.
