You will provide your own argument in four to six typewritten pages
to one of the following three questions. In conference with your
Recitation T.A.'s, your own interests as transmitted have figured in
the selection of these topics.
Question 1
Discuss the motives of the Athenians in the 5th Century for
establishing and maintaining their empire. See your Bury & Meiggs and
the suggested guides for a wealth of additional ancient material.
Question 2
Both Herodotus and Thucydides spend a great deal of time discussing
the reasons the wars they treated broke out. Citing evidence from
both of these writers and your other readings, can you explain why the
ancient Greeks STOPPED fighting and made peace in three, specific
examples? The quality of your grade will depend upon the depth of
your analysis.
Question 3
This last question is historiagraphical in nature. Taking
full consideration of EVERYTHING that you have heard, discussed, and
read in this class, provide at least three examples wherein you can
demonstrate the means by which the source sought to influence the
manner in which you evaluated the subject. My lecture notes are fair
game (but NOT mandatory) for one of the three examples, but standards
of citation are not relaxed!
