RELIGIOUS STUDIES 106:

FALL 2003
MODERN RELIGIOUS THOUGHT:
EXISTENTIALISM & RELIGION

REQUIREMENTS
A. Class Participation This is an absolute must. This is a seminar with interspersed lectures, which means that the primary motor of the course will be students themselves – come to class prepared to talk in open way about the readings. You will be required to present at least two of your reflection papers (see C for "reflection papers") over the course of the semester.
B. Reflection Papers To help with class discussion and also with your writing, you are required to write seven (out of a possible 13) 1½-2 page reflection papers over the course of the semester. The papers are to focus on one topic or issue raised in the main reading for that week. Basically I want you to exercise your brain by taking one idea, one paragraph, or one sentence that you find particularly puzzling, interesting, exciting, or maddening out of the reading and do a brief critically focused exposition of that idea. You’ll be asked to share your paper with the class and to generate discussion around it on a regular basis.
Reflection papers will not be graded, but I will look for improvement in writing and analytical skills through the course of the semester – final grades will take into account class attendance, class participation and reflection papers.
C. Practice Paper (due 2/25)You’ll be required to expand one of your reflection papers into a four-page practice paper that extends the analysis of a given text. This will be graded and handed back to you with suggestions for revisions. You will then have the option of revising and expanding the paper as your midterm paper.
D. Midterm Paper (due 3/25)You are to write a 6-8 page analysis of one text focusing on one specific issue or idea within that text. Midterm paper can be an expansion and revision of the practice paper. In addition, I will provide you with sample questions and topic ideas which you may use.
E. Final Paper (due
Extensions on any assignments will be granted only by previous permission for valid excuses. In addition, it is important that you consult with me about your writing, especially the larger assignments: you are required to see me outside class at least once in order to discuss your writing. Please make an appointment as soon as possible.
The development of analytical skills in reading and writing are our primary purpose, so all writing should include analysis and not merely personal opinion. Your writing must directly address relevant passages from the readings, with quotes or adequate page references in support of a thesis.
