Fall 1995:
This course will explore the origins of Christianity from its roots in
early Judaism in the first century C.E. through the second century C.E.
The course will concentrate on a careful and critical reading of early
Christian writings, with particular attention to those that ultimately
came to be included in Christian scripture (the New Testament).
Relevant Jewish and Roman sources will also be considered. To help us
set the varieties of early Christianity in their historical, economic,
social and political contexts, we will utilize insights from historical
and literary criticism, sociology, anthropology, archaeology and other
fields of inquiry, with particular attention to the significance of
gender.
