Biography
Stephen Amico received his B.A. and M.A. from Hunter College, and his PhD (2007) in Ethnomusicology from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His doctoral dissertation, entitled Blue Notes: Gay Men and Popular Music in Contemporary Urban Russia is based, in part, upon fieldwork in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and examines the ways in which constructions of male homosexuality are both produced through and productive of popular music discourses. He previously taught courses in both popular and Western concert music within the CUNY system, and has published articles and book reviews in the journal Popular Music; Queering the Popular Pitch; and Men and Masculinities: A Social, Cultural and Historical Encyclopedia. His research interests include Soviet and Post-Soviet popular musics, dance music, gender and sexuality, affect, and psychoanalysis. He is currently working on a study of Russian popular music “divas,” and will be teaching a course on Russian concert, traditional, and popular music in Spring 2009.
