Russkij Dom (Russian House)
The Russian House is located in Gregory College House at 3941 Irving Street, across from Saint Mary's Church. We are a little cozy community of enthusiasts who are interested in Russian language and culture. We have our little rituals that help us improve our Russian skills: we meet every week to talk in Russian on a variety of topics over tea or coffee with tasty treats that we get from the Russian quarters of Philadelphia. Together with the Slavic Department we host various activities: movies, teas, lectures, excursions, and parties. If you wish, you may also get one course unit of credit (Russian 399) for living in the House. In order to do so, you simply reside in the house for an entire academic year and register for one Slavic Department class a semester. You are expected to participate in Russian House activities throughout the year showing up for three activities a week. Note that only one course unit of credit may be earned in this manner. Information about applying for residence in the Russian House may be obtained:
* if you are only interested in living in the house without getting a credit, please contact Dean Christopher Donovan at cdonovan@pobox.upenn.edu.
* if you would like to gain a credit, you also need to contact Dr. Maria Shardakova at mariash@sas.upenn.edu.
The next year resident-coordinator will be Olena Belyakova (olenavb@sas.upenn.edu).
Everyone who already speaks or wants to speak or to listen to Russian is welcome to all of our activities. Feel free to bring your friends. Weekly activities include:
Tea/Coffee Hour
When: Wednesdays, 7 p.m.
Where: The Greenhouse
We get together for an informal chitchat in Russian on a variety of
topics. Everyone is welcome to pitch in with their topics, ideas, questions,
and what not.
