AGENDA

1)  __Introduction__. (MINUTES 0-5)

Greetings between the Philadelphia and San Francisco sites;
greetings extended to webcast receivers and e-mail participants.

Description of the communication process of this event.

2)  __The history: How did we get here?__ (MINUTES 5-30)

Visions of Lew Hill and other early Pacifica pioneers. ((IB))
What is said on the subject of listener-sponsors in the Pacifica
founding documents?

Roles of listener-sponsors in the early years.

Incidents, conflicts, and changes: what happened in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s?  The problems at Pacifica did not start in 1999.

Including:  The loss of "Democracy Now" in Philadelphia: the Mumia Abu-Jamal connection.  The Lockout of KPFA that began on July 13, 1999, and the events that followed  ((KR)).  The "Christmas Coup" at WBAI.

3)  __The crisis today: Options and strategies.__ (MINUTES 30-105)

The management-listener struggle, and the split in the left. ((EH))

Recent on-air and behind-the scene developments. ((DF))

The three lawsuits, including listener-sponsors vs. Pacifica.  Update on Edwin Johnson's situation in Houston.

"I want to contribute money, etc., but I don't want to support this board of directors, the changes in the bylaws, or the way things have been going at my local station": options.  Including:  The Berkeley-based Coalition for a Democratic Pacifica, which facilitated the first democratic election of anything (the Local Advisory Board of KPFA) in Pacifica history.  The Pacifica Listeners Union (history of the union; what are the 15 demands?) ((RR)).  The SavePacifica campaignConcerned Friends of WBAI ((Elections Committee member, BR)).  To boycott or not to boycott?

What would an ideal Pacifica look like?  National issues: affiliates, stringer strikers, the national steering committee, roles of local advisory boards (how would/do elections take place?), democratization efforts, affirmative action, etc.  Towards a national listeners movement.

New options: alongside, and inspired by, Pacifica: micro-radio (webcast and aircast), technological and regulatory issues.  Possible ways that (IndyMedia and other) independent producers could work with an ideal Pacifica.  Looking forward to the day when webcasting of audio and video by individuals is commonplace: is the concept of a differentiation between producer and listener a thing of the past?; how will individuals of similar interests and points of view be able to find each other, speak to each other and to the group, and form and build communities?

How are the Pacifica stations covering the Quebec FTAA meeting and protests?

What's Next?  Where do listeners agree and disagree?  What working groups
or unified action can come from this conference?  How will we keep in touch? (The event website will stay in place.)

Plans for the immediate future: announcements of upcoming events.

4)  __Go around the circle for closing comments.__ (MINUTES 105-120)
