It is possible to fall in love with the letter S
but impossible to do so while remaining American.
The American letters are R, T, C (hard C, qua K), and X.
Vowels have no nationality. That is why in the most national languages
vowels go unnotated or are indicated only by punctuation marks.
The most American mistake a photographer can make is to try nationalizing a vowel.
This happens all the time. The letter E is usually the culprit.
The letter E is an agent of inclusiveness,
it is the padlock on the exit that true Americans abjure.
The key to this lock looks something like a Y. The Welsh believe Y is a vowel,
not sometimes, but always. Three voicings for that Y. And W too.
The welsh, ever generous, have extra vowels. They are a sweet, dark people.
They would give us some if we asked.
