A DEEPER QUES

XY-> Doug Beeson:

XY-> On speed: it's true that newer machines are rendering the speed issue moot.
-> Still, I have a 486 DX33 at work and the few WP macros that I use still tak
-> tto long for me. XyWrite, on the other hand, operates at a fair clip, even
-> on my 386 SX dog at home.

Sorry that I didn't write down the timings but in comparing Xy
with Win WP 6.1 on the use of a macro changing several features
globally, Xy had WP beat by a factor of 10. Of course, when
I'm using WP 6.1 I feel I have time to fill by pipe, get a
drink, or do almost anything else. When I'm using Xy, I feel
that I begin to become obsessive-compulsive about achieving
results.

More seriously, the biggest factor I've found in Win programs
is having enough memory for a 2-meg disk cache with more than
enough left over to meet the recommended memory requirement.

XY-> As a result of my growing frustration with WP, I have decided to install
-> XyWin at work and see if i can use it more routinely to edit outide copy.
-> The rest of the worldd may be heading somewhere else, but I (think I) know
-> good thing when I see it. I'm sticking with Xy.

My wife uses Xy on her souped up XT. And it's as fast as any
Windows word processor. Ah! progress.
