Exterior: On A, in the center, a boy before his seated teacher who looks into his opened roll. The boy seems to be reciting, the teacher checking. On the roll: MOISA MOI / A[N]PHI SKAMANDRON / EUR[R]WN ARCHOMAI / AEI[N]DEIN vac. This scans as hexameter, but conflates two ideas: Muse, to me . . . and, I begin to sing of wide flowing Scamander (cf. Buschor in Furtwängler [1904]). On B, on the left, another boy stands similarly before a flute teacher. Above, a closed bookroll and closed tablet are hung on the wall. In the center, a third boy stands before a writing teacher who holds the stylus poised to write in his tablet (or to check the student's exercise). Thus, the recitation, flute lesson, and writing exercise are distinct aspects of life in the school. Three other inscriptions on the vase are in the Attic alphabet: DOURIS EGRAPSEN (internal); HIPODAMAS KALOS (A); HIPODAMAS KALOS (B). (From Immerwahr, [1964], 18-19)]
