The Latin Future DURABIT became confused with the perfect DURAVIT. The
latter survived as the OF preterite, whereas the former was replaced by a
paraphrase conjoining the infinitive and the verb 'to have': DURARE
HABEO 'I have to endure' > durerai 'I shall endure.'(Kibler 59)
