GIS Applications in Archaeology

Project Description

March 17, 2003

GIS Applications in Archaeology students:

There are two elements of the Project for the class. The first is to write up a full proposal for a project that is of your own choosing. You will submit a brief outline of this proposal (1 page) next week. The subject of the proposal may be something that you would like to continue in another term or it may be something that you have already started. You do not have to finish the entire project this term. What we do want you to do is take a specific element of the project that you CAN finish this term and work on it. This should have some GIS feature to it obviously and you should create or work with a data set of some kind. A part of what you hand in should be then a description of the data set that you created and /or worked on and a discussion of how you would use this data in your larger project. The length of the project proposal should be 10-12 pages.

Next Monday night, March 24, each of you will be asked to present BRIEFLY a summary of the progress that you have made on your project. You will be limited to 5 minutes and I will stop you at that point. This is in order that we can get through all of your reports and have a little time for discussion as well.

You should touch VERY BRIEFLY on the following: Objectives of the overall project, questions of methodology, and expected outcome. A more detailed description should follow of what you are actually doing for the component of the project that you will use for your course requirement. Tell us what maps you have found to use, or what data source you will use, or what map you will create based on what information. What tools will you use? What do you want to learn as a result of this work? You may also pose questions or problems that you are having.
