RS 102 - Science and the Sacred
Overview
This course will be an intensive exploration of the differences, similarities,
and intersections between science and religion. The focus will be especially
on the biophysical sciences and their implications for religious understanding
in different faith traditions. The course will be in four units:
an introduction to the field of science and religion;
a comparative philosophical study of cosmology, evolution, and metaphysics;
a consideration of gender, race, and class as they influence the philosophies
and practices of both science and religion; and
envisioning of future trends and scenarios for science, society, self,
and the sacred.
This course will be taught by Dr.
William Grassie , a visiting lecturer from Temple University, with the
support from a special grant from the Templeton Foundation. No prerequisites.
Diverse philosophical and faith commitments are welcomed.
Maximum enrollment is 60.
