An important and required component of the course was our on-going,
online conversation through the use of e-mail and a class-based listserv.
Students were required to post weekly "response papers." These
informal papers are meant to be a dialogue in which students read each others
postings, give feedback, pose questions, offer interpretations, and argue
positions. While the minimum posting was once per week, students were welcomed
to post more frequently and were expected to keep abreast of this online
conversation. Forty percent of the final grade was be based on participation
in this e-mail component of the course.
This was a closed listserv. Only students in the
class were able to participate. The logs from the discussion, however,
are public and can be read at
the courses gopher site. A public listserv and newsgroup is envisioned
to facilitate further discussions of these issues.
