Some New York Times Articles on "Immersion" and other
kinds of ``Bilingual" Education.
Note that the term 'immersion' seems to have been coopted by various people, and
are using it with different meanings than the original meaning, which was
(primarily), majority-language children being immersed in another language
program, not minority-language children. One of these writers below even
calls for immersion + rigorous training in a child's mother tongue (which is
always a
part of good immersion programs anyway!)
Article by
John Tierney, called "The secret to becoming bilingual." (Note
that this article claims that the children `become' bilingual with no help
from the school system!)
Letter to the editor by Otmar
Schreiber on his reactions to all this, having grown up bilingual.
