From an article in New Yorker, Annals of Design , 7/12/99, p. 33.

Ford's new Chief Designer, Mays, being interviewed:

``A vehicle doesn't necessarily have to be only to get you to your destination," he says. ``It can be your destination." I asked him if that wasn't also true in the 1950's, in the day of Harley Earl. ``In the fifties, the metaphors involved nothing but jet aircraft or sex," Mays said. ``Now we want a metaphor that is more sophisticated. People feel they cannot be without entertainment for even five minutes today." He paus for a moment. ``I do consider what we do here to be some form of entertainment."
