Redundancy.

Why do languages have more phonetic differences than they ``need"? Why aspiration in initial position, etc. Redundant distinctions add extra reinforcement to the channel so that if one thing is lost, other things may carry the distinction. Road signs: stop: word, red, octagonal; yield: yellow, triangular, ``yield"; information: white/green, rectangular, text. Or, extra phonetic features reinforce our perceptions of word boundaries.
