Assignment #1
Three words not yet found in the dictionary
September, 1999

  1. Pretzelvania

I found the word brand-name Pretzelvania on the shelf at my grocery store. It's a blend of 'pretzel' and (Pennsyl)vania, of course. There is a website for the Bachman company that makes these pretzels, and even a supposed 'University of Pretzelvania' where people can go to learn how to make the products of the company--there's a College of COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT, a COLLEGE OF BAKERY & PRODUCTION, and a COLLEGE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP. The Bachman Company doesn't seem to have an obvious corporate headquarters, but has branches throughout New England, New York, and a few in the middle Atlantic area. The first one mentioned is The Bachman Company TBC Southeastern MA, 28 Main Street, Bldg. #13, North Easton, MA 02356. One would think that with this name, the corporation would be strongest in Pennsylvania, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The company (at least under the name of Bachman) claims to have been in existence ('a family favorite') since 1884.

  2. CAUCE

This word, which stands for Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email is is an ACRONYM. It was found in a New York Times story about control of the internet on June 12, 1998. This organization attempts to prevent the spread of unsolicited email (known also as `spam') via new technology that puts it not only in your email box, but right on the computer screen.

The choice of this acronym may be influenced by its resemblance to the word cause as in `just cause'. It also makes it a more pronouncable acronym than some others...

  3. wim-wam(s)

I found this word in the Philadelphia Enquirer on June 20, 1998. It is a reduplicated or rhyming-pair type of formation, and means something like `the Willies' (as in `it gives me the Willies') The word occurred in an article entitled `` Clinton should head for China and pack the Indonesian script" by Trudy Rubin

The Indonesian drama, in particular, is a wake-up call for China. One part of that drama has already given Chinese leaders the wim-wams. During Indonesia's recent unrest, the military behaved very differently from its Chinese counterparts nine years ago at Tiananmen Square. Indonesian forces refused to fire on demonstrating students. The one misstep -- when four students were shot dead -- infuriated the country and precipitated Suharto's fall.

The source for this article is Philadelphia Enquirer, June 12, 1998, pg. R2.
