A book length study entitled ÒAuthors, Scholars, and the Making of
Classics,Ó which
will explore how the rhetoric of classicism in ancient authors helps to determine
what sorts of literature modern readers deem worthy of classic status, and how
such judgments condition our understanding of ancient Greek and Latin literature
in general, including those works that are not commonly considered ÒclassicsÓ in
the fullest sense.

A conference on the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity in various
aspects of
African-American culture, such as literature, the visual arts, and post-colonial
education and scholarship. Participants will include national experts in Classics
and African-American Studies as well as professional writers and artists whose
work involves classical antiquity.
