Opening Statements
Ralph Rosen called the meeting to order and introduced three
keynote speakers, Lowell Edmunds,
Bernie Frischer, and Richard Thomas.
Each of them
spoke to the question of whether there
is a problem with graduate education in classics and in the profession
at large, and commented on what might be done to address such a problem,
whether it is real or merely perceived. A lively
discussion ensued, continuing for almost three hours (including a
short coffee break). What follows is a summary or the main lines
of the discussion rather than a formal set of minutes.
